Custom Constant Spring Hangers and Pipe Clamps

The constant spring hangers are manufactured from A36 carbon steel and have custom 4-bolt pipe clamps due to heavy loads. The dimensions are 40″ length x 18″ width x 85″ height and are designed for a 1,784 lb. load with 10″ of travel. The constants will be used to support radiant inlet manifolds and have a unique paint applied due to the highly corrosive condition. The entire pipe hanger assembly went through load and travel testing prior to shipping.

Big Ton Springs with a Custom 3-Coat Paint System

PT&P fabricated big ton spring supports for an expedited delivery of six weeks from conceptual design to final delivery. The big tons measure 26″ long x 26″ deep x 34-5/8″ tall and will be used to support substantial vertical loads while simultaneously providing a base support structure. They are designed for operating loads of 36,000 lb. with a travel of .5625″ down.

Due to the harsh and corrosive environment, the exposed metal surfaces were finished with a three-coat urethane paint while the threaded components were cadmium plated with a blue Fluorocarbon coating. The big tons were also salt water spray tested according to ASTM B117 standards, and load tested to verify the springs’ functionality throughout the entire travel range.

F-Type Variable Springs with Slide Plates

May 4, 2010
F-Type Variable Springs with Slide Plates
F-Type Variable Springs with Slide Plates

PT&P fabricated variable springs from hot-dipped galvanized carbon steel components and a neoprene coated spring steel coil. P.T.F.E. slide plates are welded to the load flange to reduce frictional forces generated during lateral movement of the supported pipe. Internal guides are also installed to help maintain vertical alignment of all moving components throughout the anticipated thermal deflection cycle. The installed (cold) load is set to 10,413 lb. With a design travel of 0.720” up, the final operating (hot) load will be 8,974 lb. Each spring is equipped with travel stops and went through load testing prior to shipping.

Big Ton Spring Supports for a Chemical Processing Plant

A total of 18 big ton springs of various sizes were fabricated from A516 Gr. 70N carbon steel. The big tons were designed in a rectangular configuration in order to match the existing vessel saddle supports and the concrete foundation below the springs. PTFE, 25% glass filled slide plates will be welded on the load flanges to allow horizontal movement in addition to the vertical movements specified. The largest of the big ton assemblies has an operating load of 79,000 lb. with a travel of .706″ down.

Special U-Type Constant Spring Supports

Special U-Type Constant Spring Supports
Special U-Type Constant Spring Supports

PT&P designed a constant load support system for a fluid tank with a load of 105,000 lb. over an area of 5′ W x 20′ L. To prevent twisting of the fluid container, the support system is designed to allow for “level” vertical movement. This was achieved by using a special system composed of three U-Type constant units. Each unit employs two springs working in parallel with a common large base plate and a load flange to support the entire 5′ width of the container.

The constants will support loads of 39,000 lb., 36,000 lb., and 30,000 lb., with a total travel of 4″ in the “upwards” direction. The spring coils were coated in neoprene, and all the other major components were hot dip galvanized to inhibit corrosion. These constants were constructed primarily from carbon steel with the use of stainless steel and PTFE, 25% glass filled slide plates.

Each constant spring support is designed to carry a 27,200 lb. load and provide 13″ downward travel. Special spring coils are used in order to reduce the entire length of the pipe hanger assembly. The frame and all internal moving components’ geometry are optimized as well to reduce the overall size. In total, the frame and casing combination measure 78″L x 21½”W x 33¾”H. The customer requested frame modification for special lug locations.

C-Type Variable Spring Support Assemblies

The C-Type variable spring assemblies range in overall length from 3′-2½” to 3′-5/8″, and the F-Type measures 1′-1½. The C-Type variables are designed with an operating load of 1653 lb. and a spring rate of 680 lb/in. The F-Type variable is designed with an operating load of 1511 lb. and a spring rate of 340 lb/in.

The smaller model has an operating load of 12,100 lb. and a design travel of .443″ up. The big tons will be utilized to support substantial vertical loads while simultaneously providing a large platform to accommodate axial movement of the piping system across the load flange. Low friction rollers are installed to reduce the sliding friction between the load flange and the bottom section of a pipe shoe.

5′ 7-1/2″ Tall F-Type Variable Spring Support Assemblies
5′ 7-1/2″ Tall F-Type Variable Spring Support Assemblies

PT&P designed and fabricated F-type variables for an oil refinery in California. The variable springs are designed for an operating load of 49,771 lb. and an installed load of 43,000 lb. Two coils are used in tandem to achieve a vertical movement of 1-5/8″ downward. The variables are fabricated from hot-dipped galvanized carbon steel and are customized with an extended load column to reach an installed height of 67-1/2″. The variables for this project are the largest standard double springs offered; however, PT&P can customize to any load specification. Standard load testing was performed prior to shipment.
